Tradition

If you have decided to spend some days in Adra, either on a holiday or due to professional reasons, you must be aware of its remarkable history and long tradition, one of the most important ones in the south east of Spain.

Its cultural past and its location make it a unique place with many different traditions and festivals, and a rich folklore and gastronomy which we are extremely proud of and want to share with our visitors.

Fair

San Marcos

Adra’s fair is considered as the second one in importance in the province of Almeria and it gathers population of Adra and countless visitors between the 5th and the 10th of September. The saint patroness is la Virgen del Mar, which is taken out in a procession on the 8th of September, while San Nicolás de Tolentino is celebrated on the 10th with a procession through the old town (el Barrio).

Not to miss the “midday fair”, with bars situated in different streets and squares and where it is possible to taste typical dishes of the local cuisine (“tapeo”). There is a very special day for all the growers in Adra, the 25th of April, day of San Marcos, which is officially a festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia, while the 16th of July is the saint patroness of the fishermen, la Virgen del Carmen, which is taken by boat in a sea procession.

Folklore

Mudanzas and Robaos
“Mudanzas” and  “robaos” are dances, probably variants of the fandango, generally associated with the “trovo”(popular poetry recital), typical of the Alpujarra area, and which are still practiced in La Contraviesa, Barranco Almerín, Barranco Gurrías and Río Adra.
The “mudanzas” are danced in pairs, while in the “robao” the number of dancers is higher, because a group of men steal (“roba”, hence the name) a woman.
The music for these dances is the same as for the “trovo”, with string instruments such as the lute, the violin, the guitar and the “bandurria” (a lute-type Spanish instrument), accompanied by the castanets (here called “palillos”).
All the tradition and culture of these small farmhouses dispersed around the area of Barranco Almerín, Barranco Gurrías, El Trebolar, La Parra, etc are represented in the Cultural Association of Barranco Almerín and Barranco Gurrías, to preserve and extend the essence of our popular music.

Folclore

Flamenco
There is an important festival of flamenco in Adra called Festival de Cante Grande, which usually takes place the last Saturday in August, whose aim is to make the new promises of the flamenco known to the public. The flamenco club “la Torre” also contributes to support this art.
