Environmental Heritage “Natural Adra”

South of Sierra Nevada, in the area known as the Baja Alpujarra (low Alpujarra) where Adra is, there are places with great ecological value both for its fauna and flora.

Las Albuferas de Adra - The lagoons of Adra

A former river delta of the Río Adra created the Albuferas de Adra, Adra lagoons, a small wetland reserve that constitutes a wildlife paradise and that was originated by the isolation of coastal bays that closed to the sea due to a sedimentary contribution.
The lagoons, a Nature Reserve, boast an exceptional bird-life, with around 140 different species that nest and overwinter here, most notably the endangered diver duck (White-headed Duck), the Cetti’s Warbler, the White Grebe or the Ferroginous Duck, or that use the wetlands as a stopping-off place in migration. In the water we can find one of the few populations in Andalusia of the Aphanius Iberus (an endangered Iberian toothcarp native to the Iberian Peninsula).

El río Adra -River Adra
Rio Adra

The River Adra basin gave water and therefore fertile grounds to the different civilizations that settled in their margins for centuries.

The Aphanius Iberus, an endangered species, can be found in the river bed, and plants like the white poplar and the tamarisk, or animals like the golden oriole or the genet live also in this environment. The course of the river leads us to the district of La Alquería, an important settlement of the Moorish period.

La Parra

La Parra

The typical architecture of La Alpujarra blends perfectly with the indigenous flora and fauna, adapted to the drought. We can find the oak groves of the Mediterranean forests, patches of rosemary, furze and yellow elder coexisting with the cultivations.

La costa

Adra has kilometres of sandy beaches that invite to rest. Its clear waters encourage you to swim or dive and thus enjoy the rich flora and fauna of the sea bottom (starfish, sea urchins, jewfish,…) The coast of Adra has always been decisive for the history of the town.

La rambla de Guainos

This watercourse is born in the town of Turón (Granada) and ends in Guainos (one of the districts of Adra). It shows interesting ecological particularities, marked by an irregular flow that can produce floods or severe droughts.

It is a popular path to walk through its narrowness and see a landscape of poplar groves, irrigation channels and orchards, together with their inhabitants: the runner toad, the ocellated lizard, the eagle owl, the oleanders, etc
